Takotsubo cardiomyopathy complicated by cardiac tamponade

We describe a 76-year-old patient with takotsubo cardiomyopathy complicated by cardiac tamponade. Pericardial effusion in takotsubo cardiomyopthy is common but a cardiac tamponade is very rare. The use of anticoagulants may increase the risk of pericardial effusion and should be considered with care.

Conventional Coronary Angiography Induced Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy Complicated with Cardiac Tamponade

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) is a transient left ventricular dysfunction that typically occurs after emotional or physical stress. TCM has a benign prognosis and serious complications are uncommon. However, though very rarely reported, cardiac tamponade has occurred on some occasions. We hereby report the case of a 70-year-old woman who underwent coronary angiography with an ergonovine provoc...

Cardiac tamponade in constrictive pericarditis following cardiac catheterization.

Case Report A 62-year-old woman showed the signs of constrictive pericarditis. Increasing size of the abdomen for the past two or three years requiring paracentesis was her main complaint. She was in sinus rhythm, blood pressure 150/80 mm. Hg, and the electrocardiogram (Fig. 1A) showed normal P waves and flat or slightly upright T waves. On the radiograph the tranverse diameter of the heart was...

Cardiac tamponade and cardiogenic shock as a manifestation of all-trans retinoic acid syndrome: an association not previously reported.

Since the discovery of the differentiating activity of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) in acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), the treatment of this disease has greatly improved. Currently, the combination of ATRA and chemotherapy is considered the best treatment for patients with APL. This approach has consistently extended the remission rate and disease-free survival of APL patients with low mo...

Letter Regarding Article, "Electrocardiogram in a Patient with Takotsubo Syndrome and Cardiogenic Shock"

I read with interest the paper by Yoo et al., published in the March, 2016 issue of the Journal, about the 41-year-old previously healthy woman, who suffered Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) complicated by cardiogenic shock, necessitating resuscitation and invasive supportive means of extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation, with eventual full recovery of her heart function. The patient’s first electrocar...
